Our Alliance Building program helps alliances to establish shared vision and goals, and build long-term partnerships that respectfully integrate different organizational cultures. We also help to build networks of organizers committed to broader movement building.

Movements grow exponentially when organizations realize the limitations of what they can accomplish alone, and work toward a strong movement in which multiple organizations play different, complementary roles. This shift requires a level of clarity, alignment and coordination that can only be accomplished through a strategic alliance. Effective alliances are essential to creating change on a broad scale and to building strategic, collaborative and sustainable movements.
MSC has developed a unique alliance building methodology and supports specific models of alliances that are both single- and multi-issue at the local, regional and national levels. We work with both existing and emerging alliances to work together and proactively find common ground and navigate conflict. Our process recognizes the need to balance internal development with an external program that makes impact, builds legitimacy and attracts funding resources.
Our Alliance Building program provides:
Alliance Building Documentation and Tools
MSC documents and disseminates models, theories and best practices for building successful alliances. We are currently developing our Alliance Building Toolkit to share with groups throughout the country.
Alliance Building Training
We provide training on a range of alliance building issues, including group development, alliance building roles and structures, sustainability practices and decision-making systems.
Alliance Building Design and Facilitation
MSC supports alliances in vital areas including: principles of conduct among alliance members, decision-making and operating systems, accountability mechanisms, infrastructure samples and collaborative resource development strategies.
Network Development
We help build local and national networks of individual activists. We support organizers stay connected to the social justice movement as they move through transitions in work and life.
Conflict Resolution Facilitation
MSC works with selected alliances to implement processes for preventing and dealing with conflict. We also document models and share best practices for conflict resolution.
